Narrating the history of Shanghai
through visual storytelling on silk scarfs.

Background

This project is a commission from JIAZUO, to create a set of silk scarf representing the development of Shanghai as a city from the year 1949. The Brand Baiyulan, a brand with at least a hundred years of history, requested that the scarfs will be of different sizes and they should surround tightly around the theme of Shanghai and celebration.

China established itself on October 1st, 1949. The four decades after the year were the era of development and endurance. Shanghai was about to be confronted with the Cultural Revolution from 1967-1976. A decade of creativity and freedom confinement, however, did not stop Shanghai as a city preparing for its growth in the following phase.

The last decade of the 20th century marks the glorious beginning of Shanghai’s take off. Many skyscrapers and landmarks were built in this decade; the Oriental Pearl TV Tower being an iconic example. Shanghai was starting to embrace itself again as the center of economics, finance and international trade.

In the new century, China joined the WTO, providing a new jump board for Shanghai.  Shanghai welcomed a full bloom of  prosperity. The design is scattered with full-bloom Jade Lilies, intertwined with celebratory ribbons. The color palette has morphed into a more saturated and light-hearted hue, suggesting youth and passion.

Packaging

The three scarfs are of different sizes, hence needed different version of packaging. A limited budget pushed me to eventually land on a design that is both low-cost and aesthetically harmonious with the style of scarfs themselves.

My take-away

The silk scarfs are currently on sale since July 2021. However, the making process had many problems due to my position as a secondary content provider. JIAZUO had many suggestions about the draft versions yet after prolonged conversation about the conflicts, the results were delivered to Baiyulan and was accepted without disagreement.

The scarfs were enlisted in the gold list for Best Souvenirs of Shanghai 2021.
